The formal model was an effort after-the-fact to describe W3C XML Schema, 
not something that was done from the start.

I frequently share your aversion to altars to formality, but have to admit 
that formal models are a really powerful foundation for pattern-matching 
applications.  RELAX NG and regular expressions demonstrate that quite nicely.

Do they do everything?  No, but it's sometimes nice to know the foundation 
isn't a hodgepodge of ill-fitting ideas.
