Basically from what I see the people who care about untyped querying of XML are satisfied with XPath 1.0, those that want typed querying of XML are somewhat satisfied with the degree of integration between W3C XML Schema and XQuery. Perhaps if XPath 2.0 was renamed "XML Pattern Language for Typed Infosets" and abbreviated as XPath-T there wouldn't be this much hullaballoo since it would be clear whom the target audience was.
