Why, nothing. It is only people who cross it who must adjust their
watches and calendars. The Date Line itself has no actual existence even
in the rarefied sense in which standards "exist"; it is the product of
individual national decisions about time zones, and the only difference
between the Date Line and any other time zone boundary is that the
time difference is 24 hours rather than just one (or 1.5 or two).
Which leads inexorably to the question: which are the northernmost,
easternmost, southernmost, and westernmost U.S. states? If you know
the answers, you know why it inexorably leads; otherwise not.
