On reexamination, I can't fault your arguments although I would like to point out one thing. Even though the current trend is to utilize SOAP for distributed object calls in scenarios where the fact that XML is used as the data format for the protocol is primarily incidental, there seems to be a trend amongst the SOAP folks [from reading their blogs I admit] to alter this usage pattern to more document-centric and message based uses.
