I'd suggest  browsing the archives http://lists.xml.org/archives/xml-dev/
to see if the content is useful to you.  The list won't make much sense
if you don't know a fair amount about XML already, and questions that have
answers available in existing FAQs (google for "XML FAQ" and you'll find 
a bunch) are generally not welcomed.  On the other hand, "big picture"
questions of the sort that ordinary mortals tend to ask when actually trying
to get work done with XML for the first time can be quite interesting...

I personally hope that more people who haven't devoted years of their
life to XML will participate in this list to keep our collective perspective
grounded in reality.
