The XML Information Set[1] identifies a scheme of interpreting XML structures into pieces of information (aka Information Items). It currently presents the de facto way of viewing that information as a part of the "XML Core" standards. [1] http://www.w3.org/TR/xml-infoset/ For a W3C spec, it's rather easy to read too. It just formalizes the *common view* of an XML document.
