Simon, You know the old doctor's joke that about how to diagnose alchoholism: anyone who drinks more than you do, and a teetotaler: anyone who drinks less... Generally the syntactic level of something is reserved for what you understand, and anything beyond what you understand is called 'semantics' :-) This is literally true because I can understand EBNF but I don't understand model theory.
