From what I've seen the query situation is already pretty much united. Most
vendors use XPath or at worse a superset of XPath for queries and some
vendor-specific solution for updates.

Sure when XQuery is released it is more likely that there won't be any vendor
specific additions for querying but we may be stuck with further
fracturization where some vendors keep using their vendor-specific update
mechanisms while others use XQuery extensions for updates.
