Perhaps the easier the producer makes the consumer's decision, the more likely his results will be as he expected? Isn't that what all the namespace/RDDL/etc. efforts are about? That's the thinking that led me to packaging as being a core issue: the consumer always has a choice, but if enough bits are packaged, the intent, and the means for interpretation should be clearly visible (just had a flashback to MIME-SGML and the catalog proposal). Whether they're used or not, who knows. I'm not sure it's practical, or cost effective though... the "many little edge transformations" scenario might be more realistic in the long run. Just thinking aloud...
