I did tests some years back (and I think Rick did too?) that showed that XML-based RPC is much slower than plain RPC simply because it uses more packets... and TCP/IP rewards smaller requests. Of course, this gets *much* worse over longer distances with more hops because TCP/IP errors tend to "cascade" back.
