xerces vs jdom

hi all,

I'm just getting into xml and I realize jdom is built on top of xerces (or i
might be way off)
But, can anyone tell me the differences between the two and maybe why one
would be better than the other.
Note: I am programming with servlets, ejbs, and jsp.
