data integrity

do i need to be concerned with data integrity when sending
plain-text xml across the wire? what about over a modem line
connecting to AOL? do tcp/ip and ppp handle error correction
or do i need to have a crc surrounding my document to insure
it reaches its destination uncorrupted?
