xml spy schema validation
We've had the same experience with XML Spy except that we have received
quite a few helpful emails from their technical support.

There are at least 3 free systems which implement some subset of W3C
XML Schema validation -- a cross-comparison can be helpful.  See the
tabulation [1] on the XML Schema homepage.
