There's a tradeoff between isomorphism to the application data model
and utility/validatability of the XML form.  There are some useful
ideas around, some in the direction of marshalling/unmarshalling
_without_ schemas [1], some on what it would mean to specify a
declarative mapping between document model and application model [2].
