Before this, you can try to use another another output method.

XSLT provides 3 possible output methods (XML, HTML and text) and
depending on the XSLT implementation you are using, you may be able to
easily write custom output methods.

If you want to go into this direction, you will find 3 examples of such
methods (XHTML, HDML and formatted text) working with XT at
http://4xt.org/downloads/examples/outputhandlers/.
