RE: newbie question for database

All major relational database vendors such as (alphabetical order :-)) IBM,
Microsoft and Oracle (and others) have added XML support to their latest
database products. However all of them actually deal with XML more natively
than dealing with Java (or other pl) objects that used to be XML.

Depending on your platform, as program manager for SQLServer's XML
technologies, I recommend that you have a look at the SQLServer 2000 beta
that is available from http://msdn.microsoft.com/sql (follow the beta link
there).
