[very personal analysis] .com, .net and .org

personal analysis

When your-company-name.com is already registered, it's common practice
to take your-company-name.net as your second choice.

So has done Microsoft.

Seeing that Sun had taken the ".com", Microsoft had no other choice than
to become the ".net".

The next question is : who will be the ".org" ?

Linux ? not that sure...

Now that Microsoft has announced C#, the Java killer app already
submitted to the ECMA, Sun will probably have to open source Java.

Another well known open source consortium has become a natural receiver
of open source web technologies from Sun or IBM : armed by Sun and IBM,
Apache could become the ".org" fighting against the ".net"...

What about XML ? Is it exposed to the same threat than Java ?

XML is about data.

The industry needs inter operability and data compatibility and cannot
afford locking data as languages.

Sun, IBM and Microsoft were 100% aligned on this point during the "ask
the experts" panel session at XML Europe 2000 and XML (at least as an
external interface) could stay neutral in this new battle.

But XML is likely to remain an exception, Microsoft having mentioned
during this session that they considered even DOM as an internal
interface which could be extended.
