Proper extension for XML files? (don't laugh!)

Hello,

(Apologies if this is so simple to be a stupid question!)

We're using XML in a couple ways in an application we're doing.  Is the
preferred convention to use .xml as the file suffix, or our own suffix
depending on the flavor?
