Equally interesting avenue would be to have the GPL/Free software
community file for patents and place them into the custody of the FSF or
some other appropriate body.

I used to not favour such an approach, but as I get increasingly
concerned
about the patent mess, I am starting to think such an effort would be
worth
while.

The difficult issue is to find a way to fund the activity.
