Interesting article in Intelligent Enterprise -- another solution to avoiding the "Tower of Babel" problem. The author writes about the Universal Data Element Framework (UDEF) and semantic convergence. UDEF is similar to Bizcodes (www.bizcodes.org). Both propose mapping standard tags to IDs used for aliasing. "XML Microstandards" by William J. Lewis http://www.intelligententerprise.com/000428/supplychain.shtml "UDEF applies a rigorous rules-based approach for naming data elements (tags) from which one is able to derive a taxonomy-based intelligent ID to the name. The ID is the key that allows an unlimited number of aliases." "UDEF is a tool for identifying and resolving "semantic equivalence," multiple names meaning the same thing." "propel us forward toward the goal of developing a truly common vocabulary for e-business. Otherwise, we may find ourselves erecting a Tower of XML Babel." ================== Ken North ============================= See you at AD2000 London (www.applicationdevelopment.com) XML DevCon 2000 New York City (www.xmldevcon2000.com) =========================================================== *************************************************************************** This is xml-dev, the mailing list for XML developers.
