We've used a tool from Sun's JDK called 'native2ascii', which on UNIX is implemented as a shell script. I can't remember if the Windows version is just a batch file or an actual executable. The last time I used it (about 8 months ago), there were still some bugs in its parsing of its "ASCII-fied Unicode" where character values get expressed as '\uxxxx', where 'xxxx' is the Unicode code point in hex. If it read a string such as "We keep our files in D:\stuff\ugh\foo\bar." it would blow up upon encountering the '\u' without the trailing hex sequence. We had to run a pre-filter over any input files to up-case any non-hex-indicating '\u' sequences. Hopefully Sun either fixed this bug or dropped the tool from the later JDKs. -- Steven E.
