message queue
Another possibility is "XML via regular message queue", using something like
MSMQ from Microsoft, or MQ Series from IBM. So instead of creating some
components which know how to monitor email Inboxes, your components can
monitor queues.

In theory, these amount to about the same thing, but in practice it's
probably easier to write code to take messages out of a queue than to take
emails out of an Inbox. (Note the word "probably". I haven't tried writing
code to monitor email accounts, so I can't compare.)

Note: I work mostly in "intranet" type applications, so I don't know all of
the logistics of using something like MSMQ or MQ Series over the Internet.
