You might want to take a look at OCS [1], which is way of describing
directories of channels,  i.e. metadata for channels. Each channel
entry contains a description of the channel, categorisation and
contact details. Each channel can have multiple formats (RSS,
ScriptingNews, Avantgo, plain text, etc) each with their own
publishing schedules.

It's used currently by a number of channel providers and readers such
as XMLTree [2], Carmen's Headline Viewer [3] and StartsHere [4].

It should be easy enough to parse OCS for a WAP phone (in fact I
already do it indirectly at StartsHere [5])

I'm working on the next version (0.5) which will tidy up some of the
syntax. I'm also soliciting for any additional features people have for
the format - just mail them to me and I'll see how they fit.
