My understanding is that namespaces are here to give us the power to mix different vocabularies within one XML document, for instance mixing XSL statements with HTML output in a stylesheet. An XML schema (again, my understanding) defines rules how a validating XML parser can validate constraints on the document structure. If an element content is "open", I am free to add other elements, in particular elements from a different namespace. For instance, xsl:template might have an open content model and allow to insert any kind of tags, for example a <html:title>. However the title tag itself can only contain character data (I guess :-). So it seems it is best to have one XML schema reference per namespace that is in use in the document, right?
