Yes, it is too much to ask. Your SML data may be well-formed by some idea you have of the meaning of the term, but the XML spec has a different, more precise definition of "well-formed". A conforming XML processor is required to reject a document with illegal element names. That document is, therefore, not XML. "Close" isn't good enough.
