There was an interesting case study at the Giga Information Group EIA 99 conference about an enterprise application using Samsung Smart Phones. A project manager from TECO described a scheduling application they implemented using Samsung Smart Phones. TECO is one of Florida's electrical utilities and the goal of the application was to provide a better scheduling window for customer service calls (e.g., cut off the power). The Smart Phone is programmable and has a browser. The technicians use the phone to download their work schedules, and to report when a task is complete. This allows TECO to give customers a 2-hour window when a service technician will arrive. The new application eliminated a trip and allows the technicians to be based at home.
