There was an interesting case study at the Giga Information Group EIA 99
conference about an enterprise application using Samsung Smart Phones. A
project manager from TECO described a scheduling application they
implemented using Samsung Smart Phones. TECO is one of Florida's electrical
utilities and the goal of the application was to provide a better scheduling
window for customer service calls (e.g., cut off the power).

The Smart Phone is programmable and has a browser. The technicians use the
phone to download their work schedules, and to report when a task is
complete. This allows TECO to give customers a 2-hour window when a service
technician will arrive.

The new application eliminated a trip and allows the technicians to be based
at home. They no longer drive in the morning to a TECO office to pick up
their daily work schedule.
