Yes some did. The XML effort hijacked an international standard by subsetting it and putting the W3C trademark on it. The confidentiality rules of the W3C and the singleton control of its policy ensured that this standard would be modified and shaped by and for the goals of the members of a consortium. Otherwise, it ducks all of the issues the list is trying to address without any leadership. Yes, tie XML to Java. If that gets applications out the door and checks coming back, by all means, do that. Now, the rest of you should decide what you want to use namespaces for and just do it.
