The proxies to the remote objects are generated dynamically and for the most part the concept of a remote object and a local object is transparent. I have heard that ObjectSpace will be riding the XML wave like everyone else, so perhaps you should ask these folks what their plans are. As many people know ObjectSpace wrote the JGL (Java Generic Library which is now officially known by some other name because SUN had some trademark squabbles) which is inherently distributed when used within Voyager. For them to write a distributed DOM implementation would be pretty simple. In fact, for anyone to write a distributed DOM implementation using Voyager would probably be pretty painless as well.
