The simplest principle I've found is: Content = human-readable Attribute = machine-readable. But even that is open to interpretation... the principle is based on the idea of an attribute affecting the content, not actually being output itself. HTML operates in that way: you don't 'see' HREFs or SRCs, but they surely affect the behavior of the tag, and it's the behavior I'm really interested in being variable, not the content... xml-dev: A list for W3C XML Developers.
