At one stage I *did* use File.separator. However I don't think it's
relevant, except when the system interacts directly with the local file
system. I converted this to SLASH (i.e. '/'), since this is what is
required in URLs.

My problem was/is that I believe some of the class libraries to be buggy on
some implementations (or at least poorly documented).
