Hi Darko,
connecting to a database is not part of the original XSLT or XQuery spec; you will have to use proprietary extensions that depend on the processor being used.
I would suggest the approach taken by DataDirect XQuery and XML Converters (http://download.progress.com/5331/open/adobe/prc/psc/021909_datadirect_data_integration_suite_40/index.htm); if you want to stay in the XSLT world, the extension provided by Saxon can be used (http://www.saxonica.com/documentation/sql-extension/intro.html)
