Aaron BuehnerSubject: Being able to use >, <, >=, and <= with strings
Author: Aaron Buehner

Hi, Im trying to Query an xml document similar to the one that follows and find all the entries that happened before a specific time.

Query
//Log/Entry[Time <= '23:27:35.112']

I know this query doesn't work because XPath can't work with strings the same way VB.Net(The language I am most familiar with).

XML Document:
<Log>
<Entry>
<Date>06/01/2005</Date>
<Time>23:25:24.640</Time>
<Message>Packet allowed</Message>
<Source>
<Source_IP>192.168.0.118</Source_IP>
<Source_Port>2158</Source_Port>
<Source_Type>LAN</Source_Type>
</Source>
<Destination>
<Destination_IP>24.220.0.10</Destination_IP>
<Destination_Port>53</Destination_Port>
<Destination_Type>WAN</Destination_Type>
</Destination>
</Entry>
</Log>

I found a way to do it but it is kind of long. Maybe somebody knows a shorter method?

Method for finding times before 23:25:25.000

//Log/Entry[number(substring-before(Time,':'))<23 or (number(substring-before(Time,':'))=23 and number(substring-before(substring-after(Time,'23:'),':'))<25) or (number(substring-before(Time,':'))=23 and number(substring-before(substring-after(Time,'23:'),':'))=25 and number(substring-after(Time,'23:25:'))<=25.000)]
