Currently 4.0 is available only as a 60 days evaluation version, being a
beta version. I believe that eventually we will have a similar kind of
license structure for 4.0 as we currently have for 3.1; but that won't
happen until 4.0 is officially released, which will be around mid May.

I use a licensed copy of 3.1. The beta download site makes it clear that if I install the 4.0 beta, I will have the ability to roll back to 3.1, but it doesn't indicate whether or not I will *need* to.
At the end of the evaluation period, will I be forced to roll back to my 3.1 licensed copy, or will my license essentially be "updated" to 4.0 and I can keep going after the evaluation period?
If the answer to this differs based on 'beta' vs. 'release', what are the implications once the 4.0 'release' comes out?

Paul,
4.0 breaks the automatic/free updates mechanism that have been in place
on 3.x in the past 12 months; if you want to use 4.0 in licensed (paid)
mode, you will have to pay to upgrade from a 3.1 licensed (paid) or free mode.
So, when the 4.0 beta installation expires, you will have two chances:
- roll back to your previous 3.1 installation
- buy an upgrade from 3.1 to 4.0 and get a licensed (paid) 4.0 version
Of course, next 4.x updates will be available automatically/for free to
anyone running 4.x
