I am new to using Stylus and looking to create a Sylesheet(XSL) from an XML document.

After viewing the 6 min tutorial I do not have or see the same options as I see in the tutorial to do this action.

any help is appreciated.

Hi Joe,

The 6 min tutorial is using an older version of Stylus Studio and some of the options have been changed or removed. I'm not sure what you mean by "create a Stylesheet(XSL) from an XML document". You can create an XSLT stylesheet by selecting File->New->XSLT Stylesheet from the menu and selecting a source XML URL in the Scenario Properties.

Rory

We have 104 XSL stylesheets that are used for templates of some 1000+ reports.

Problem I am facing is that there are some stylesheets that do not open using my normal viewer. Most do open, so I am thinking that there is a problem with either the stylesheet or the XML document.

When I run the troublesome stylesheet from within STYLUS it asks me to provide an XML file. I choose one of the one of the associated documents and the output looks great.
However, STYLUS doesn't seem to do anything as far as correcting or converting the stylesheet.
Or another option would be if I can convert the XML to an EXCEL spreadsheet. This also does not seem to be an option within STYLUS.

Hi,

Can you provide a sample XML and XSL that does not open using your normal viewer? Is it possible that your normal viewer is at fault? It may be that your normal viewer is not handling some part of the XSL specification properly. Have you tried opening the XML and XSL in a 3rd viewer and seeing if the same problem occurs?

Regards,
Rory

I attached both the XSL Document teamplate and one of the reports which does not open up with our viewer.

As mentioned, the document opens up fine with STYLUS but the closest I can get to opening with other viewers is with column headings listed as c0, c1, c2,,,, as opposed to the correct column headings: Deal_Name, Deal_Dept, Agent,,,

When I heard that STYLUS was able to take an XML document and using the Documents Wizard use the option to 'convert an XML to XSL template'; that would be a good solution. Now it looks like I have to start over again...

Hi,

I tried opening the document and applying the XSL in Stylus Studio, Internet Explorer 8, and FireFox 3.6 and all of them displayed the report with the correct column headings.

I don't think that Stylus Studio will be able to do what you want as regards to correcting your XSL files or creating new ones based on the XML document. As regards to converting to Excel you could write an XSLT to convert to CSV, but that would not have any formatting.

You can also generate Java or .Net code by clicking on XSLT->Generate Code and then automate the generation of the reports.

Regards,
Rory
