The expression works as expected with the sample data you have provided.

The expression below returns true with Saxon and DataDirect XQuery

exists(doc('file:///E:/QOF_XML/2010GMSMonthlyMessage.xml')/root/Repeat/domain/Indicator-group[@size = "943"])


Function "exists" takes a sequence of items (not nodes) as argument.

In your case you are testing the presence of an element called Indicator-group.

Which XQuery processor are you running?
