DG SarboSubject: converter:EDI:val=no AND chr=...?????

When I want to convert a xml output to edi, I tell SS that I don't want it to validate. When I do the conversion SS tells me this:

___________________________________________________________________
Error during conversion: Error during conversion: [DDEE0043] ERROR Invalid character '?' (\uffff).

Dialect: EDIFACT

Version: message=D/98B;table=D98B

Message: IFTDGN

Segment: COM (line 14)

Position: COM02

Native error: 21, in table: 0085

The character is not part of the character set defined
for this EDI file. You might see this warning if a
lower-case letter is used when the character set only
allows upper-case. In other cases, this warning is
also emitted when a character not in the character
set is being replaced by the symbol specified in the
"replace=" URI option. The character set in an EDIFACT
file can be overridden with the "chr=" option.

I know why SS throws this error. It is because I used "'", "?" and "+" in my input file.

1) Why does SS give the error in a way that I have to spend an hour looking for this problem with the COM/COM02 segment, when I only use COM/COM01? Just leave that bit out of the error message because it does not help (makes it even harder to find the problem)

2) Why does SS check these things in my input? I use the option val=no
There is no valdiation... so leave it be! Or am I misunderstanding the val=no option

3) I tried to do the chr=UNOC, UNOC belongs to this type of message. I cannot find what characters UNOC holds in SS. Should I use another char set?

1) It happens because those characters cause the input for the COM01 to be
completed, so it is at the start of where the COM02 element would be
that triggers the error message.

2) It has to check them, because it is impossible to write out valid EDI
if the input is not convertible. Although we let you turn off many
types of validation, we don't let you disable anything that will produce
syntactically invalid EDI downstream.

3) UNOC corresponds to ISO-8859-1. It's not clear which character set
you should be using; if we could see a sample of the file that is
causing trouble we could help.
The various definitions of the character sets in EDIFACT can be found
here: http://www.gefeg.com/jswg/cl/v41/40107/cl1.htm
For more clarification on the contents of each set, Wikipedia is good
source because it shows exactly which characters go in each position.

Now, if the delimiters are set in the usual fashion, there should be
no problems with ', ? or + in input files if the input is XML, or even
if the input is EDI and the characters are escaped with the defined
release character. If they are not escaped in incoming EDI, then an
EDI parser ends up with an ambiguous condition, and cannot continue.

If you want to send a copy of the file for us to look at, zip it
(so that intervening mail transport agents don't mess with any of the
non-ASCII characters that might be present) and send it to
stylus-field-report@progress.com.

Does this help?

I have send you the files.

It is strange behaviour that we did not encounter so far. We have a similar mapping where I can put in ',+ and ? in the input xml. No problems there...

I'm having difficulty duplicating this; what version of
Stylus Studio are you using?

Also, after this particular issue, can we move the support over
to DataDirect SupportLink at http://www.datadirect.com/support

That way questions will get a specific case number and can be
tracked better.
