Neal WaltersSubject: How to Build a Dynamic XPath Expression in XSLT
Author: Neal Walters

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find it.
Is there a way (using extensions or whatever) to build a dynamic xpath expression? Here's a sample:

<Root>
<Group1>
<Account>123</Account>
<AccountCode>ABC</AccountCode>
</Group1>
<Group2>
<AccountInfo>
<Account>123</Account>
<Firstname>Neal</Firstname>
</AccountInfo>
<AccountInfo>
<Account>456</Account>
<Firstname>Sam</Firstname>
</AccountInfo>
</Group2>
</Root>

I want to loop through Group1, and then look up data inside Group2 to output Group3. I have omitted the looping below.

<AccountCode>
<xsl:value-of select="*[local-name()='AccountCode']"/>
</AccountCode>
<Firstname>
<xsl:value-of select="//*[local-name()='Group2']/[local-name()='Firstname']/..[local-name()="Account"][text()="123"]"/>
</Firstname>

Here's the concept in pseudocode:

<Firstname>
$var1 = select="*[local-name()='Account']"
<xsl:value-of select="//*[local-name()='Group2']/[local-name()='Firstname']/..[local-name()="Account"][text()="$var1"]"/>
</Firstname>

Unfortunately, I haven't touched XSLT in about 18 months, so it gets rusty fast.

Thanks,
Neal Walters

Something like:

<xsl:for-each select="//Group1">
<xsl:variable name="accountCode" select="AccountCode"/>
<Group3>
<AccountCode>
<xsl:value-of select="$accountCode"/>
</AccountCode>
<Firstname>
<xsl:value-of select="//Group2/AccountInfo[Account = $accountCode]/FirstName"/>
</Firstname>
</Group3>
</xsl:for-each>
