Thais FlorySubject: SS 2008 error message not displaying useful information that SS 2007 used to
Author: Thais Flory

When the XML data has a "U" in the X12 ISA11 node, Stylus Studio 2007 displays a detailed error message:
Error: I/O error while converting data in ConvertFromXML node 'Convert from XML #2': "U" (\u0055) is not valid as a "repeat" symbol

Stylus Studio 2008 only says:
Error: I/O error while converting data in ConvertFromXML node 'Convert from XML': com.ddtek.xmlconverter.adapter.edi.Symbol$EDIInvalidSymbolException:

Please advise, thanks.

What URI settings are you using?
Do you have auto=off or auto=both?

The auto setting was tested with "both", "yes" and also left off entirely.

Could you tell us three things:
1. When you says SS2008, do you mean release 1 or 2?
2. What is your build number? (something like 1050g or 1147c)
3. Could you send a sample of the document causing trouble?
In the ISA segment, that position changes purpose depending
on the version.

In pre-004020, ISA11 was I10, but from 004020 forward, it is I65,
which is the Repetition Separator. So a 'U' isn't valid there if
the version is 004020 or higher, and a 'U' is mandatory there if
the version is 004010 or lower.

But current versions of the converters should automatically adjust
this for you.

1. Stylus Studio Enterprise 2008 Release 2
2. Build 1147c
3. Sample attached

The EDI version of my sample data is 5010, and yes, I expected it to throw an error, but the problem is that the error message doesn't identify the bad value or even the XML node, like Stylus Studio 2007 used to do.

Thank you.

P.S.: Technically, the X12 specs do not rule out the character 'U' as a repetition separator, although they do recommend non-alphanumeric characters, such as the caret. But we do like the fact that the XML Converters won't allow it because it could cause chaos due the chances of the data containing the character 'U'.

We have duplicated the problem.
It happens only going from XML to EDI; from EDI to XML it is
handled properly.
We'll let you know what the schedule is for release.

The expected behavior is that if auto= isn't off, then the
converter should automatically add a missing character or
supply a valid replacement character.

A fix for this will be in the next patch release.

I didn't know the Converters are supposed to fill in this value if it was missing in the XML, that's really cool, thanks for letting me know that.

But yeah, I just tried leaving the ISA11 and ISA16 nodes (repetition and component element separators) empty and setting the Converter URI to:

converter:EDI:auto=fromXML:component=>:repeat=^

I got the same error message I mentioned above for the ISA11, and this one for the ISA16:

Error: I/O error while converting data in ConvertFromXML node 'Convert from XML #2': [DDEF0073] FATAL ERROR No component character specified in ISA16
Dialect: X12
Version: syntax=00501;table=005010
Segment: ISA (line 1)
Position: ISA16
Element: I15 (s) Component Element Separator
Value: ""
Native error: 6, in table: 723

I'll be waiting for the next patch, thanks.
