Jon GallegosSubject: Dynamic input and output names
Author: Jon Gallegos

I have created an XSLT and have completed the unit testing and all is well. I am now ready for some system testing on an AIX server. I have a question before i get started.

The input files that i will be translating are dynamic. They all start with the same four letters, ecrf, but the rest of the file name is dynamic. (i.e. ecrf00145.xml, ecrf00146.xml, ecrf00147.xml, etc...). The output files also need to be dynamic (i.e. PLM001.xml, PLM002.xml, etc...).

This doesn't seem related to Stylus Studio, and this is a discussion forum in support to the Stylus Studio product.

This does pertain to stylus studio. What is the name of the file that Stylus Studio produces?

Select the scenario properties and create the output URL.

OK how do i make that name dynamic?

Stylus Studio is a development tool; if you want to control thing dynamically, you are talking about embedding and XSLT engine in your application. So, you either use your preferred XSLT engine and bundle it in your Java or .NET or C++ application; or if you are using the Stylus Studio built-in processor you can also use the command line version of such processor which is available in the <stylus>\bin folder (StylusXSLT.exe).

I will be runing this on sn AIX machine and do not plan on running it using a Java, .net or C++ application. I plan on using a shell script. Is that not possible?

It's software, anything is possible. The easiest way to do that is probably to rely on the Saxon XSLT processor and to use it's command line interface that you can find documented on the saxonica.com website.

Purchasing more software is not an option

ok

HEre is the scenario

I will translating XML to XML. I have created the a stylesheet and all works fine.

However, the application (which can not be changed) that is sending my XSL data sends multiple files and for archival and tracking purposes, these files all have different names.

Is there a way to read multiple files in Stylus Studio as I described it above?

The basic version of Saxon (which is what most people use, I suspect) is available as an open source free version.

Not through the Stylus Studio UI (that in any case would not work on AIX). It's possible through the command line utility (which will not work on AIX), or through the command line of other Java-based processors, like Saxon or the Java built-in (XercesJ usually) one; I'm not positive the Java built-in processor is accessible through a command line out of the box, but you can surely investigate that.
