John RussellSubject: Studio Crashes On File Open
Author: John Russell

My installation crashes when I try to do a File -> Open and many other things (even Help -> About). I can only load files by right-clicking on a file in Windows Explorer and choosing Open With Stylus Studio.

I have re-run the install trying a repair but no luck. I am trying to avoid a reinstall.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,

John Russell

Hi John,

It seems like that Stylus Studio is failing to load the Java Virtual machine.

Could you please try to set the following registry key to 0?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\
---Software\
----Stylus Studio\
-----2008 XML Enterprise Suite\
------Runtime Settings\
-------JVM Enabled

Thank you for the reply.

I have 2007 XML Professional Suite in my registry. Under Runtime Settings I have (Default) and JVM Args. (Default) has no value set. JVM Args has
-Xdebug -Xnoagent -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,suspend=n,address=8000

What should I change - if anything?

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

Please try to toggle "Enable JVM" under Tools -> Options -> General -> Java Virtual Machine then restart Stylus Studio

Could you also verify if you have Java installed properly in your system?

from a "Command Prompt" execute

C:\>java -version

Thanks

When I run java -version I get
java version "1.6.0_01"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_01-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.6.0_01-b06, mixed mode, sharing)

Still when I try to toggle the JVM setting as you described, the tool crashes

This time I chose to send the error report (id -> stylus-field-report@progress.com). I don't know if you can view it or not ... but this is the same crash I get when doing a file -> Open and many other tasks.

Thanks,

John

John,

We didn't receive any error report. Could you please try again?

Would be possible to try the 2008 evaluation and see if behaves the same (there will be not interference with the 2007 version)?

The 2008 version works great. The 2007 version still fails though.

I resent the error from the 2007 version. Did you get it this time? Does it help?

Do I still qualify for the upgrade to 2008 anyways? Is there someone I could contact directly concerning the status of our licenses (we have 2)?

Thanks,

John
