Hi Bob,
does this happen only with a specific editor? (XML, XSLT, Java..)

Thanks,
Alberto

Here's another example. Open file dialog:

\\gr-file-01\f$\Program Files\handshake\HandshakeWebServices\HSPartDefinitions\Custom\somefile.xml

"The file does not exist"

Hi Bob,
I tried using Stylus Studio 2008 (build 1050e) and I can open files using UNC paths. Could you double check that the URL is correct? (The name of server is different in the messages you posted)
Does it work if instead of using the special f$ share you define and use a user-defined share?

Thanks,
Alberto

The error occurs during save.

Are you sure this is not a permission issue? What does it happen if you try to open that same UNC path using, say, Notepad and then saving the modified file?

Via Notepad, no problem.

And, no problem if I save to a local drive.

can you verify if it works if instead of using the special f$ share you define and use a user-defined share?

\\gr-srv\development\ returns the same error.

Alberto, Any Ideas? Does SAVING to UNC Paths work for you? This is extremely frustrating.

Hi Bob,
I have tried several permutations of UNC paths (loading from UNC and saving to the same place, loading from local and saving to UNC, etc..) and in all cases the saving succeeded.
Can you gather more informations about a situation where you get consistent failures starting from a fresh instance of Stylus Studio? (e.g. open Stylus with no documents open, load file from XXX, save to YYY)
Also, can you describe the server you are using as repository (operating system, which users have rights to write, etc...)

Thanks,
Alberto

Alberto,

This is a MS Server 2003 SP2. I have full access. As I mentioned before, I don't have a problem using Notepad, Word, etc. Only Stylus. I also downloaded the 2008 version, and the problem (Failed to create directory "\\gr-bkup-01\": The specified path is invalid.) still occurs.

Since you have a custom file/save dialog, I'm guessing it has to do with a bug somewhere there.

Thanks for your continued assistance on this.

Hi Bob,
I really need a consistent test case where the failure always occurs: for instance

1) open Stylus Studio
2) load XML document from XXXX
3) save XML document to YYYY
4) ...

specifying where the error occurs, possibly with lots of screenshots of every step.

Hi Bob,
thank you for providing the video: along with the operations you are doing, it showed you are using MS Vista, and it looks that under Vista the error code for "cannot automatically log in" is a different one.
We'll place a fix in the next version of Stylus; you can work around the problem by mapping the share to a local drive (using the proper user/password) and reading/writing from that.

Hope this helps,
Alberto

I am having the same problem.
SS successfully opens an existing XML file from the file share, but cannot save file back.
My SS is SS2010 Enterprise Suite, Build 1540b.

The exact fully qualified file system path is the following:
\\lmsdev\c$\inetpub\wwwroot\LandManagementMVC\Web.config

The SS opens up the following error message dialog box:
---------------------------
Stylus Studio 2010 XML Enterprise Suite
---------------------------
Failed to create directory "\\lmsdev\":
The specified path is invalid.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

My observation is that SS renames the original file as web.config.bak. Upon clicking on the OK button in the error message dialog box, SS renames file back to its original name web.config and all the modifications to the XML file are gone.

Regards,
Yitzhak-

I just upgraded to a new version: SS2011 Enterprise Suite, Build 1756a.

The pesky bug was carried over to this release – SS opens but cannot save files to the UNC paths.

The exact fully qualified file system path is the following:
\\lmsdev\c$\inetpub\wwwroot\LandManagementMVC\Web.config

---------------------------
Stylus Studio 2011 XML Enterprise Suite
---------------------------
Failed to create directory "\\lmsdev\":
The specified path is invalid.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Yitzhak

Trying to close tab with the un-saved file produces the following message box:

---------------------------
Stylus Studio 2011 XML Enterprise Suite
---------------------------
Save changes to file:////lmsdev/c$/Inetpub/wwwroot/LandManagementMVC/Web?
---------------------------
Yes No Cancel

File extension .config is missing.

Some extra details about my environment could helpful.
My client machine OS – Windows 7 Enterprise.
I am trying to save web.config file from/to the Windows Server 2008 R2 server where I am a local admin.

Regards,
Yitzhak
