vishal sinhaSubject: Oracle XML Gateway output CONVERT TO x12 and to an HTTP address
Author: vishal sinha

Is there a feature where an application could be built and deployed which could run i nthe back ground and do the above?

I have the oracle XML gateway which generates an XML output and sends it to and HTTP or SOAP address.

Unfortunately this HTTP or SOAP address only accepts X12 format file.

I need to convert the XML into X12 and then send it to the HTTP or SOAP address.

ALL THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN THE BACKGROUND AUTOMATICALLY ON A SHCEDULED BASIS.

iS IT POSSIBLE TO BUILD AND DEPLOY an application using Stylus studio which could do the above and how to do it?

I just installed Stylus studio and it is asking for JAVA ENGINE PATH.
When I go to Stylus studio home page about this it shows me a screen for JAVA PATH under TOOLS -> OPTIONS> JVM

This box is not available in my stylus studio verion? IT HAS ONLY JRE version and parameters box??

Why is Stylus studio keeps out of date help topics on its web site?

I have just downloaded Stylus studio trial version.
Customer service always goes to voice message.

Is this procudt all hype or is it usable?

Vishal,

DataDirect XML Converters is embeddable converter engine available for Java and .NET that allows to convert XML to X12 and vice versa.
More details at http://www.xmlconverters.com

About the error Stylus Studio is reporting, most likely there is no Sun Java Run-time (JRE) installed in your system.
To get the JRE visit http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

To be on the safe side, could you post a screenshot of the error?

Hope this helps

Thanks for your message. After re-starting Stylus studio it just worked and error message has disappeared.

Regarding dataconversion from XML to X12:
-----------------------------------
I do not have any JAVA or .NET application. I have Oracle XML GATEWAY which sends XML files to a HTTP address.

I need to create an application(Which could be another HTTP address) that can take the XML file from Oracle XML gateway and then redirect it to the final HTTP adress. Before it redirects the XML file it needs to convert it to X12 format.

Could you please provide step by step instructions how to achieve it in Stylus studio? The tutorials are more geared towards manual process than a practicle business solution where things need to happen in background and no manual intervention is required for E(Extract), T(Transform) and L(Load). If Stylus studio claims to b a true ETL tool it needs to be able to do this. How do you deploy and execute this application.

Stylus studio help files need to be updated to explain these in simple terms if you really want to make the product popular. Otherwise it is just a hype.

Currently I am looking at Altova's Mapforce which seems to have better explanation about this. I would prefer Stylus studio in place though if you could provide the steps.

Probably my message wasn't enough enlightening.

Stylus Studio is a tool for developers, it can e used to design queries, XML Schemata, XSLT transformations, etc.

DataDirect offers several embeddable components like DataDirect XQuery and XML Converters those are the run-time libraries you can use as part of an application.

What you are describing requires an HTTP server that acts as message router.

One possible solution would be to install Tomcat and to write a simple servlet that uses DataDirect XQuery and XML Converters to translate and re-route the message to the final end point.

Publish such solution is out of the scope of this forum.

Hope this helps

Okay I got it now. I thought so earlier too.

This hyped applications are more to do with jazzy tools and lot of hype.

The functionality which you are telling could be done easily in a notepad editor to write XML.

For data queries and stuff Oracle itself is much better and DB links and many functionality allows it to query data and write to another database. There are lots of pacakages written in a simple language as SQL!!

When it comes to practical solutions these new tools shy away and start asking for installing this server and that server. That is the very reason they never get accepted widely in the industry.

If I need to install TOMCAT Server just to send some files to another HTTP server why don;t I go back to the old good elegant solution of writing the files to a directory and running a scheduled task to FTP or some simple code to transfer them to another destination??

These hyped tools fail to do a simple industry requirement of able to redirect or transfer files from one application to another.

They talk a lot about Application to Application integration. Isn't it my reuirement a simple ETL E(extract), T(Transform) and L(Load).

Hi Vishal,
I think we are having a misunderstanding here, that hopefully the trial version of Stylus Studio you just download will help clearing. As you can see on your computer, Stylus Studio is an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that is, it gives you the tool to develop your application. It helps you creating the XSLT and XQuery code that maps between two different formats; it previews those transformation using several engines, it debugs some of them to find out design flaws in the code you wrote. It lets build pipelines of processing steps and runs them too. What it will never do is to behave like a service that listens on a HTTP port, does the transformation and writes the result to another HTTP port; that's an ESB or an application server.
What Stylus can do for you is to generate the Java code that performs the same operation you just developed; at that point you can take the Java code, buy a license of DataDirect XML Converters, a license of Saxon-SA or Data Direct XQuery (if you are unable to use the free Saxon-B engine) and assemble your own XML gateway on top of whatever service you have available.

Hope this clears the matter,
Alberto
