Jason St. LouisSubject: Question about using Data Direct Converters and Licensing
Author: Jason St. Louis
Date: 26 Sep 2007 03:04 PM
Hi there,

I'm trying to use a converter that I wrote in a Java application. I'm using Stylus Studio 2007 Enterprise, release 2.

I'm using the Installation ID located in the About window in my Stylus installation for the call to StylusFileFactory.unlockAPI(). It successfully unlocks the API but when I try to use the converter I get the following exception:

com.ddtek.xmlconverter.exception.ConverterException: The evaluation period for the Built-in or Custom XML Converter product has expired.

I'm currently running this on the same machine that Stylus Studio is located on. My question is, do I need a separate license to be able to use the converter in Java code?

Here's the code I'm using for reference:

public void convert() throws ConverterException{

String activationKey = "xxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxx";

if(!StylusFileFactory.unlockAPI(activationKey))
{
System.out.println("the activation key " + activationKey + " is invalid");
System.out.println(StylusFileFactory.getUnlockAPIError());
return;
}else{
System.out.println("succesfully activated: " + StylusFileFactory.getUnlockAPIError());
}
try{
StreamSource converterSource = new StreamSource( new File("/path/to/converter/converter.conv") );
StreamSource fileSource = new StreamSource( new File("/path/to/text/file/file.txt") );
StreamResult result = new StreamResult( new File("/path/to/xml/file/file.xml") );

Converter toXML = new ConverterFactory().newConvertToXML(converterSource);
toXML.convert(fileSource,result);
}
catch(Exception e){
System.out.println(e.getMessage());
e.printStackTrace();
}

}

Yes, you need a separate license; the unlock mechanism you are using is no more active in v2007 Release 2 of Stylus Studio.

XML Converters are bundled in Stylus Studio and always accessible from the Stylus Studio UI (as long as Stylus Studio is properly licensed); but you can use them programmatically (Java or .NET code) only for 14 days - as a normal XML Converters evaluation period.

If you need more time to evaluate XML Converters, I would suggest that you download the standalone XML Converters package from http://www.xmlconverters.com/download; that will grant you another 14 days of evaluation period. After that period, you will need to purchase a valid license depending on your needs, http://www.xmlconverters.com/buy

we have some older code that uses an adapter using StylusFileFactory and createStylusFile() in Java code to apply an adapter. Are the XML Converters intended to replace this method of using the adapters?

Right; "adapters" is the old name for XML Converters, that have now moved to a more flexible licensing and locking mechanism controlled by the installation process rather than by the unlock software procedure.
