Tim WolfeSubject: XSLT processors not creating output file
Author: Tim Wolfe
Date: 17 Sep 2007 12:07 PM
Hello,

First, let me qualify the following post by stating that I have only recent discovered the joy that is Stylus Studio. I recently downloaded Stylus StudioŽ 2007 XML Enterprise Suite, Release 2 and got an evaluation key to activate it. Everything seems to be going alright except for a problem I am having with the processor for an XSLT that a co-worker created.

He is able to process the XSLT without any problems (Fully licensed version of the same software). However, when I try to preview the XSLT, no output file is created (or the existing output file created by my co-worker is not updated).

If I set the processor to Saxon everything works for me but I need to be able to use MSXML4 and 6. I have (re)installed msxml6 from MS website, no joy. This is a new laptop so it is quite possible that I am missing something that Stylus Studio needs, anyone have any ideas on what that might be?

The web site says that the evaluation is fully functioning, but is this truely the case or do external processors not work for the eval?

Thanks in advance
Tim

You are mentioning that things work when using Saxon, so I'm assuming that excludes any possible problem with relative paths, source XML documents and similar.

When running the XSLT using MSXML, does anything (at all) happen? Is any output displayed in the Output window (View > Output)?

Can you try (re)installing also MSXML 4? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=3144b72b-b4f2-46da-b4b6-c5d7485f2b42&displaylang=en

Output:

External XSLT processing started...
...done
Post processing starting...

There is no error indicated and the post-processing does start. The output file is not created, so Antenna House gives the error that it cannot find the file (post-process option is set to open the same file that is set as the output file).

Yes, the exact same configuration works when the processor is set to Saxon, so I am assuming that scenario is setup correctly.

Same problem with msxml4.

I can however, set the processor to custom and use the msxsl.exe command line processor in the "C:\Program Files\Stylus Studio 2007 XML Enterprise Suite Release 2\bin" directory.

OK; so, we are talking post-processing of XSL-FO here, which is useful information to have. Not sure how MSXML is related to that, but let's ignore that for the time being.

So, the XSLT processing step seems to be doing its work:
> External XSLT processing started...
> ...done

Can you confirm that the output file is properly being generated? Is the output URL set in the first page of the scenario settings?

Then, you say:
> ...
> Post processing starting...
> There is no error indicated and the post-processing does start.

I'm assuming that means you see more output in the Output window to indicate that post-processing has started; does the same output suggest that the post-processor has completed its task? Can you also post the command line for the post-processor that you are using?

No, we are not talking about post-processing

No, it is NOT doing its work

The problem is that the output file is NOT generated. It SAYS that it started and is "done" but did not in fact do anything.

OK, this is becoming an interesting chase.

So, you say this has nothing to do with post-processing... but the only output log you have provided does mention post-processing...

You seem to be using a custom XSLT processor setting (again, according to what you posted); what is the command line you are executing for the custom processor?

Maybe the easiest way for us to understand is to take a look at the XSLT and its scenario settings? Can you email us the XSLT you are trying to execute to stylus-field-report@progress.com

I just copied/pasted the contents of the output window. The messages indicate that the processing should have completed but the results were not as expected (since I expected a file to be created).

>You seem to be using a custom

I apologize if my previous post confused the issue. Let me attempt to simplify things again.

I am able to set the processor to custom and specify the command line executable that is packaged with Stylus. But, that is not what I am ultimately trying to get working. On the Processor tab I can select any of the following options:

Built-in
Saxon 8.9.0.3
Java built-in
.NET XslTransform
.NET XslCompiled Transform
Microsoft MSXML
Microsoft MSXML 4
Microsoft MSXML 6
custom

Saxon works, the output file is created. The MSXML options do not work. Originally, I posted here to determine if there was a reason that the MSXML options do not work right out of the box.

I am reasonably sure that there is no problem with the XLT because other people in my office are able to use MSMXL to process these XLTs (same files I am using, from a network share).

I am also pretty sure that the source XML and Output URL is set correctly since these settings work with the Saxon processor selected.

This begs the question, is there something else I need to install in order for MSXML specifically to work? Are there any specific jar files or other executables that I should look for that might result in Stylus Studio thinking that it processed successfully when in reality it did nothing? Are there any other settings that would effect MSXML processing but not Saxon? I should also note that the "settings" button on the processor tab is grayed out when I select the MSXML options.

OK, this helps.

I'm assuming you tried all MSXML entries, with the same result; each entry references a specific MSXML version (3.x, 4.x and 6.x). If you don't get errors when you select them, the selected version *should* be available on your system, or at least, that's what Stylus Studio detects.

When you don't use the Custom processor settings, but you are running one of the MSXML listed processors, do you get any output in the Output window? I'm assuming you get nothing in the Preview window, as that's where the XSLT result would be displayed.

Just for the sake of it, can you just create a new XSLT file, enter something like <root>text</root> in the XSLT root template and run it using Saxon and one of the MSXML processors to see if you get the same behavior?

BTW, what Stylus Studio version and build number are you running? (Help > About)
