This is probably something very simple to resolve

let $test1 := <predicate>a>b&&c<d</predicate>
let $test2 := <predicate>e>f</predicate>

let us now try to apply

fn:string($test2) ---> "e>f"

but when

fn:string($test2) should result in "a>b&&c<d"
but instead I am getting a
"Parsing at line ... in: Expected entity name for reference"

so it is clearly treating it a tag definition "<...>", whereas I want to use it as a string.

how to get around it? escape sequence? or stay away from using <>... (painful option)

What XQuery processor are you using? Trying that with DataDirect XQuery, Saxon and Stylus Studio built-in, I get the result I would expect, with no errors.

I am using Studio 2006 rel.3, Saxon 8.7.1

Jack,
this does look like a problem in Stylus Studio; the same query works fine if you using DataDirect XQuery or the built-in debugging processor. It also works fine in Saxon if you generated Java code and run it (XQuery > Generate Java code). We are investigating.
