John AccardiSubject: Can't add file to project
Author: John Accardi

All throughout my project I can add files into various folders ...
except for one set of files in one particular folder ...

Naming problem?

Folder:
MOD:IntroducingFundamentalsoftheTCPIPModel/End of Module Exercise Introducing TCPIP

Name of files I'm tring to add to above folder:

ExercisesDevIntroducingTCPIP.dita
ExercisesIntroducingTCPIP.dita
ExercisesLabIntroducingTCPIP.dita

Procedure;

Open a file already in the project.
Right click save as
name it as any of the three files shown above

I do get it displayed in the right hand edit window.
I also do see its correct new name on that tab.

Usually I then see it appear in the left nav pane under Other Documents,
but for these three files, that does not happen.

(This same procedure works with all other files and folders in this
same project.)

Please advise.
Thanks,
John

Hi John,
only files supported by Stylus Studio can be placed in a project (and by default .dita is not one of them).
In order to make it a recognized extension you should open one of these files (from File | Open, not by renaming an existing one) and when you see the dialog asking which Stylus module should be used to edit it, be sure to check the 'Always use this module for this file type'.

Hope this helps,
Alberto

Hi Alberto,

Thanks for responding. There are about 100 such files in my project and they all have a *.dita extension. Only these three files are the problem. Do you have any idea why all the other ones work?

Regards,
John

Hi John,
I have tried creating the same folder in a project and adding a file with the same name, and it worked: do you find a pattern that prevents those files from being added?
I.e., can they be added to a different folder? Can they be added if you change their names to be slightly different (one character shorter, one character different)? Is the folder a top-level one, or is it under another one?

Thanks,
Alberto

Thanks again, Alberto.

I did try a number of renaming games as you suggest and have only been successful when I misspell the files I want in my project folder. The attachment shows that I had to use a double E (EE) in my 3 filenames. It will not work if the names are correctly spelled. This must be a SS bug and if I knew formally how to submit this bug, I would.

John

Hi John,
can you check if your project already contains files with that name?

Thanks,
Alberto

Hi Alberto,

Yes, I checked as you suggest, and there are no other files in the project with these names. I investigated a little further. I can manually edit the *.prj file and set the filenames to the desired spelling, save it, and then open it with SS. They do now appear as I want.

I can only suspect some bug when SS does this through the menus and how it displays in the GUI. This may or may not be relevant but, I was trying to put these files into a subfolder of a subfolder. Maybe being this deep has confused the code.

At least I know I can manually edit the *.prj file as a workaround.

Thanks,
John
