O BarrettSubject: Hidden Costs of SS?
Author: O Barrett

I was told yesterday that when running the Java code that SS creates on another server, I'd need a separate (XML) license at about $3,000. Yikes!!!

After I recovered from fainting, I'm now wondering if there are any other "hidden costs" (that you find out about "later")with using Stylus Studio?

That is are there any other features, then when used outside of SS (if any features could be such as running Java code that SS creates), that they're be yet another license/other fee?

I was totally surprised by this server license fee.

Thanks in advance.

If you need to deploy the Stylus Studio Deployment Components (soon to be officially named DataDirect XML Converters), then you need to purchase a valid license for them; see http://www.stylusstudio.com/deployment/faq.html for more details.

That doesn't mean that the Java code generated by Stylus Studio requires the use of such components; as long as your work doesn't require flat/legacy/EDI-to-XML (or vice-versa) transformations, the Java code generated by Stylus Studio can just rely on free components, like Saxon, MSXML, XalanJ or others. Also, if you need access to relational databases through XQuery, Stylus Studio does rely on DataDirect XQuery for that, and you will need a DataDirect XQuery license to be able to deploy applications based on it.

Hope this helps.
