Justin KohlheppSubject: SS w/ Visual Studio and VSS
Author: Justin Kohlhepp

I have a couple of questions related to using SS with Visual Studio and VSS.

1) I have a need to use SS to create some XML docs, XSDs, and XSLTs that will be incorporated into an ASP.NET project. I'm developing the ASP.NET project in VS.NET 2003. So in the end the files I create with SS have to end up in a subfolder of that ASP.NET web project. And they have to be checked in to VSS with the rest of the project. My plan is to have the files included in the VS.NET project, but also have a separate SS project which has just the files I am interested in for the XSLT process. Does this make sense? What have others done in this situation? Should I do VSS checkouts from VS.NET or SS?

2) This relates to the above, but is slightly different. I am used to the behavior of VS.NET interacting with VSS, such that files are by default read only, and when you try to change one VS.NET automatically prompts you to check out. SS doesn't seem to work this way. I can open a file which is checked in and SS just let's me type in it without checking it out. Is there a way to force SS to stop me until I check out the file?

Thanks,

~ Justin

Hi Justin,
if you instruct Stylus Studio to interact with the VSS repository you will be asked to check out a file when you attempt to modify it. You can create a VSS-enabled project by running the Project | New Project Wizard and choosing the "Project from SCC" one.

Hope this helps,
Alberto
