Hans LutschSubject: How to change JVM settings -Xmx as suggested
Author: Hans Lutsch
Date: 24 Mar 2007 11:10 AM
I have purchased the latest version of the Enterprise version 735f running 1.5.0_11-b03 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM Sun Microsystems Inc.
debug mode port:8000

I am trying my first Pipeline which is to run an xquery that saves the result to a file on my hardrive. When I run it I get:

Error: XQUERY processing by XQUERY block 'Convert to Spec 2000' failed: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

I searched this site and it says to go to tools/options/JVM and change -Xmx to =100m but I can't find that -Xmx thing anywhere nor can I find any instructions step by step how to do this, where to type it in syntax ? etc.

I know that the Xquery itself works good, it is just the pipleline that does not seem to work.

Sorry, this stuff is not my speciality and new to me.

Hi Hans,
I have seen that you find out where to place the setting (as you
reported the crash that occurred when you attempted to try the
-Xms600M setting); would it be possible to zip the pipeline and the
associated files and send it to stylus-field-report@progress.com?

Thanks Alberto,
When I was searching through the help forum on your Stylus site I came across the instruction to enter -Xmx500m into the tools/options/jvm setup. I struggled for a couple of hours before I found that the 500m was a typo and has to be uppercase 500M to get it all to work. Perhaps you can have your team make that correction in the FAQ forum to stop others from the same issue?

Anyway once I got the -Xmx500M entry made I got it to work on smaller source files but the large file I could not. I was experimenting with the 600M when I experienced the crash as you know. I will try to send you the samples as soon as I can as I am tied up today. Tony Lavinio replied to the Crash and I will be taking his advice for more Ram as well.

Overall I am quite happy with the application. The fact that a total newbie like myself can get it working is a testiment to its design. I will be recommending it to other airline reliability colleagues who are in the same position as I am.

Thanks a bunch,
Hans Lutsch

Just as an addendum, the lower-case 'm' was not a typo.
There must have been some other problem, because the 'k'
or 'm' at the end of -Xmx or -Xms is case-insensitive.
