Michael LangeSubject: Grouping nodes between like nodes
Author: Michael Lange
Date: 30 Aug 2006 11:06 AM
I have recently purchased SS Enterprise. Here is my problem.

I have XML that looks like this:

<body>
<metadata> ... </metadata>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<metadata> ... </metadata>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
</body>

and I want to transform it to this:

<body>
<repeatingSection>
<metadata> ... </metadata>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
</repeatingSection>
<repeatingSection>
<metadata> ... </metadata>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
<datavalues> ... </datavalues>
</repeatingSection>
<body>

I am trying to group everything between the metadata tags and add a level when I output the transformation.

I am currently trying this template:

<xsl:template match="metadata">
<xsl:variable name="next-metadata"
select="following-sibling::metadata[1]" />

<repeatingSection>
<xsl:copy-of select="following-sibling::*[$next-metadata &gt; .]" />
</repeatingSection>
</xsl:template>

and I am not getting any output in my repeatingSection tags. In other words, my output looks like this:

<body>
<repeatingSection> ... </repeatingSection>
<repeatingSection> ... </repeatingSection>
...
</body>

and I don't get any of my datavalues.

What do I need to do to get the missng output?

Thanks,
Mike

This template seems to do what I want except that it is unacceptably slow:

<xsl:template match="metadata">
<xsl:variable name="next-metadata" select="following-sibling::metadata[1]" />

<repeatingSection>
<xsl:copy-of select=". | following-sibling::*[followingsibling::metadata[1] = $next-metadata]" />
</repeatingSection>

</xsl:template>

My input files are pretty big (roughly 45,000 lines) and this template can't seem to handle the volume. If it cut the input file down to about 8,000 lines it seems ok.

How can I optimize this and get the same results??

Thanks,
Mike

The answer can depend on the processor you are using.
If you are using an XSLT 2.0 processor such as Saxon 8.x,
there are specific constructs for grouping (for-each-group).

Some good pointers on the subject of grouping are found at
http://www.jenitennison.com/xslt/grouping/
